    Description

The Schiffers' Book  on Chinese Export Porcelain classifies this piece among six Canton straight sided teapots, and rates it as  best in quality. The decoration features an expanded view of the Canton river scene with pagodas, mountains, trees, water and boats; the  ends of the crossed noodle handles are "tucked inside" relief flower heads; the lid finial (knob) is a stylized strawberry fruit; the spout has a nodal ring like a bamboo. The decoration overall represents novel variations in the Canton traditional patterns. Defined unglazed foot shows buff clay. The spout is a bit uneven and there is a glaze skip along the rim. They appear like small chips but are production flaws under magnification.  Good to excellent condition overall considering the age as well as the crude & coarse nature of Canton wares. The teapot is app 5 1/2 " tall with lid on; 4 5/8" wide. The teapot extends out to app 8 1/4" from spout tip to the back of handle. (Stand is not part of the sale.)
