This is a Japanese
doukake
which is placed on the side of the
shamisen
body. These are used to protect and add style to the instrument. Made of silk
kimono
cloth stretched over a stiffened paper backing. The design is of flowers in soft pink and blue and a bright persimmon orange color.
This
doukake
measures about 8 1/2" any 4"
(21.5 x 10 cm). Having been well used and well loved the fabric remains in
good antique condition
.  Please note wear makes in the attached photos. There are no stamps on the back, however, this one seems to be the same as those that are stamped with the size
