Description
This is a Teapot in a Chinoiserie style attributed to the Phoenix Pottery, Kaolin, and Fire Brick Company in Phoenixville, Pa.(I believe this site was in business from 1867 to 1903 under several names). The bottom is marked “ PATd
/
May 26 / 1874”.
I have only been able to find two of these on the internet. One was sold several years ago and one is in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It is in a brown and amber mottled, Rockingham ware / Rockingham
glaze. The scene depicted on the teapot is of a seated Asian woman being served a plate or tray by an Asian man. (This scene is on both sides). The lid has a glazed “indent” probably for venting.
It also has a few chips. These are not that noticeable when the lid is on the teapot. The teapot has a chip on top where the lid would sit and a line. I believe this line was in the making but I am not positive. There are a few tiny chips on the spout. There are very few other chips and what are present are very small. There is a crack that starts about 1 ½ up from the bottom and runs along the bottom. There are a few other cracks, some of which I believe could be in the making, some are from age and some appear to be crazing.
(Again, this is hard to tell what has caused these lines / cracks. We try our best to describe all items as accurately as possible).
It is also hard to tell if there are cracks at the handle and spout where they are applied to the teapot or if this is just from being applied originally. The teapot, with lid on, stands approximately 8 ¼ inches tall. This teapot, even with its issues, displays well.
Please look closely at all pictures and ask questions before bidding. We try to describe all items as accurately as possible. Comes from a smoke free home. Thanks for looking and please check out my other listings. Always an eclectic selection of items!!!
