    Description

Available is a beautiful example of an early World War II numbered Legion of Merit Commander Grade medal named to a Brazilian General.
The medal comes in a World War II black titled case that measures approximately 4 9/16 inches wide and 7 3/16 inches long.  It has its original mounted neck ribbon.  The medal itself measures approximately 2 ¼ inches across and 3 inches from the top of the suspension loop to the most bottom point.  It is numbered "697" on the reverse of the suspension loop making it from the first contract of Bailey Banks & Biddle Co. (BB&B) manufactured medals.  The medal is named on the reverse to, "Gen. of Brig./A. Z. de/ Assumpção" on three lines.  The medal was issued to Brigadier General Alexandre Zacharias de Assumpção of the Brazilian Army in 1942.  He was cited for service as Commanding General of the 8th Military Region, Brazil. The 8th Military Region was headquartered in Belem, which was a major support base for US aircraft transiting to North Africa and the Mediterranean. During WWII, the American Army made 31 awards of the Legion of Merit, commander grade, to Brazilian officers.  The General has his own Wikipedia page, but I was having trouble inserting the translated link.
The medal and case are in very good condition showing light age from honest wear and storage.  The enamel on the front and back of the medal is free of any chips or cracks.  The gilt on the medal shows only light wear and tarnish to the high points.  The neck ribbon has some light age/soiling and one of the catches is missing.  Overall, this piece displays extremely well.  It is quite desirable being a named and researchable piece.  Please be sure to check out the large photos I have posted and judge condition for yourself.
